It is called the Christian’s ‘blessed hope’ 1. and yet (in my circles anyway) it is preached on so little. OK, the ground of the Lord’s return is dense with land mines. But this glorious truth is revealed to comfort not confuse, and to move and motivate us to passionate, urgent evangelism.
This event is the finale and grand climax to human history, and as we follow the world news, we need to be constantly aware (without an unhealthy obsession) that everything is unfolding and moving toward this momentous event when the King of the Universe returns in royal splendour to bring the unrepentant to justice and his loyal subjects to their great reward. He will right every wrong, and all who have ever lived will give account for their lives.
The Scriptures (cover to cover) point us emphatically and repeatedly to the second advent of the Lord Jesus Christ. Statisticians tell us there are 1,845 Old Testament references to the 2nd coming of Christ – interestingly, for every one prophecy of his first coming, there are eight for his second! In the New Testament, out of the 27 books, 23 teach on his return. And, of course, the Saviour himself taught clearly and graphically of the need for all to be ready for the momentous event, and for his saints to wait with eager expectation.
So, why not take off your ‘Pre’, ‘Post’ or ‘A’ badge for a few minutes and listen to this effort to major on the majors, so that our hearts might be stirred. And remember, our Lord Jesus urges us to: ‘Keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come’ 2.
“Oh, that the Lord would come! He is coming! He is on the road and travelling quickly. The sound of His approach should be as music to our hearts! Ring out, ye bells of hope!” CH Spurgeon
