Brexit. Gender fluidity. Spiralling violence on our streets. Increasing suicides among young people. Global terrorism. In a world of growing confusion and fear, who is there able to speak to our day with the commanding voice of authority we all long for? Only one.
Jesus said: “I am the Good Shepherd…” 1
We were not made to go it alone, God created us to belong…and to be led
Jesus Christ is the perfect guide through life and death. And with what authority he spoke! And with no contradiction between his speech and his flawless life.
Dangerous voices
How we need to beware of the loud and dangerous voices clamouring for our attention today – mere opinions on how we should live our lives. Our culture screams, “Live for today!” “It’s all about you!” “You’re free to live as you please!” The result? Broken homes, broken hearts, broken lives. Everywhere we look we see evidence of the existence of the thief Jesus spoke about who “comes only to steal and destroy”. We are a generation with plenty of hype, but no real hope – “bouncing back & forth between superficial optimism and debilitating pessimism”, as one has said. 2
Guide through life and through death
Only the Lord Jesus Christ can rescue us and then lead us through the maze of this life and finally, through that dark and inevitable vale of death through which all must pass. His voice trumpets with unparalleled authority …
“I lay (my life) down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again”.3 He is the Lord! No-one kills him, he willingly lays down his life, and at the appointed time, rises from the grave!
Paths of righteousness
The path on which he leads his sheep may not be the most comfortable, nor politically correct one. But it is that which leads safely home. The crucial question is however, have you entrusted your life into the hands of the one who laid down his life on the cross, taking the punishment for our sin, and rose again that you may share in his eternal joy?
“I know my sheep and my sheep know me” he says 4
Christian, The Good Shepherd knows you! He is aware of your every weakness, fear and temptation, yet tenderly cares for you! And even though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you need fear no evil, for he will be with you. What could be simpler? What could be more profound?
